Beatrice Hunsdorfer, an embittered woman supporting herself and her two daughters, takes in a decrepit boarder and inflicts petty vengeance on those around her; her older daughter Ruth is highly strung, prone to convulsions, while the younger, Tillie, shy yet gifted in science, conducts a botanical experiment that ultimately succeeds despite Beatrice’s jealousy and emotional struggles.
