Synopsis:

9 to 5, The Musical, with music and lyrics by Dolly Parton and book by Patricia Resnick, is based on the seminal 1980 hit movie. Set in the late 1970’s, this hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era is outrageous, thought-provoking and even a little romantic.

Pushed to the boiling point, three female coworkers concoct a plan to get even with the sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot they call a boss. In a hilarious turn of events, Violet, Judy, and Doralee live out their wildest fantasy- giving their boss the boot! While Hart remains “otherwise engaged,” the women give their workplace a dream makeover, taking control of the company that had always kept them down. Hey, a girl can scheme, can’t she?

Available Roles:

*Ages are suggestions, we encourage anyone 16 years of age or older to audition!

Violet Newstead:  40 to 50 (Vocal Range F3 to D5) Violet is in her forties and is the senior supervisor at Consolidated Industries. She is frustrated and downtrodden in the workplace thanks to the sexist, pigheaded attitude of her boss, Franklin Hart. Violet has been passed over for promotion several times and is fed up. She is a widow and has a teenage son, with whom she has a close relationship. She knows that the office accountant, Joe, has a crush on her but brushes him aside as being too young for her. Together with Judy and Doralee, Violet kidnaps and imprisons Hart in his own home. Their actions make Violet feel empowered and her career ambitions rise again. She is thrilled to be made the first CEO of the company and finally admits to her feelings for Joe.

Doralee Rhodes: 30 to 35 (Vocal Range G3 to E5) Doralee is in her late twenties and is happily married to her loving husband, Dwayne. She is a sexy country girl, with blonde hair and a good figure, Because of her appearance she is judged by the other women as a shallow “Backwoods Barbie”. All the female workers constantly snub her invitations to lunch. However, she is kind, intelligent, and good natured. Doralee is constantly fending off Franklin Hart’s unwanted attentions, finally realizing that the other women snub her because Hart has told them he and Doralee are having an affair. Furious, Doralee helps Violet and Judy to kidnap and imprison Hart in his own home. With Hart gone, Doralee finally feels free and happier in her job.

Judy Bernly: 30 to 35 (Vocal Range Ab3 to F5) Judy is in her thirties and has never worked before. To begin with, she is meek, mild-mannered, and embarrassed that her husband has left her for his nineteen-year-old secretary. She embellishes her Resume to get the job at Consolidated Industries and is flummoxed by her new workplace. Her mistakes lead Hart to take her to task. However, when she, Violet, and Doralee kidnap and imprison Hart in his own house, her confidence is boosted, and she feels empowered. When her husband, Dick, returns to ask for her back, she tells him to “Get Out and Stay Out”.

Franklin Hart: 45 to 50 (Vocal Range C3 to Gb4) Hart is president of Consolidated Industries. He is a sexist pig, who either snubs or lusts after the women working there. He pursues Doralee, groping her and tricking her into going away with him to fake conferences. He is hated by most of the women at Consolidated, apart from his assistant, Roz, who adores him. Hart is married to Missy, a clueless and ditzy woman. He is furious when Judy, Violet, and Doralee kidnap him, and vows revenge on them. However, Hart’s plans backfire when the Chairman of the company approves of the office’s recent increased productivity, and he is mortified to be transferred to the Bolivia office.

Roz Keith: 35 to 45(Vocal Range G3 to C5) Roz is Hart’s admin assistant. She is fiercely in love with him, even though he does not look at her in that way. Roz is not liked by the women in the office as she snitches on them, and constantly produces new memos on company rules. She overhears Doralee, Violet, and Judy, talking about Violet accidentally poisoning Hart, and immediately goes to tell him. Roz is confused and distraught to be sent away from Hart on a course in France but returns in the belief that it is what he wants for her. She never knows that Hart was kidnapped by Doralee, Violet, and Judy.

He is overjoyed when Violet finally lets her guard down and falls for his charms.

Dick Bernly: (35 to 45) Dick is Judy’s estranged husband. He left Judy for his young secretary. He is middle aged, balding, and has the beginnings of a paunch belly. When the secretary leaves him, he returns to ask Judy to come back to him. He is surprised at the change in her confidence, as she tells him to get out. The actor playing Dick may also double in the ensemble.

Kathy(30 to 40Kathy is a secretary and the office gossip at Consolidated Industries. Like the other women, she also despises Franklin Hart. She has a child and is thrilled when Doralee, Violet, and Judy introduce free childcare at the office, under the guise of a new scheme from Hart. Kathy has no solo singing but sings in harmony with the other office workers and will dance in Ensemble numbers.

Margaret(30 to 40) Margaret is the office lush. She is frequently drunk at work, and everyone knows it. Thanks to the reforms put in place by Violet, Judy, and Doralee, in Hart’s absence, she goes to rehab and returns a completely changed woman. Margaret has no solo singing but sings in harmony with the other office workers.

Missy Hart(45 to 50) Missy is Hart’s ditzy wife. She and Hart do not seem to have anything in common. The actress playing Missy may double in the ensemble.

Russell Tinsworthy: (50 to 65) Russell Tinsworthy is the Chairman of the Board at Consolidated Industries. He arrives at Hart’s office to praise Hart for the increased productivity in the last month. Tinsworthy has the measure of Hart and rewards him with an unwanted secondment to the new offices in Bolivia. Tinsworthy makes Violet the first female CEO of the company. The actor playing Russell may double in the ensemble.

Ensemble: The ensemble makes up some of the smaller featured roles, including the doctor, a candy striper, and a detective, plus other employees at Consolidated Industries.
